Khamekaye

KHAMEKAYE Khamekaye are large markers placed along the Senegalese coast to indicate where, inland, villages are located. Khamekaye means «marker» in the Wolof language, one of the most widely spoken in Senegal, a term used to designate these beach signs, which are built with all the waste washed up by the sea. The bases of the structures are trees and rhizomes, while the rest is comprised of garbage produced by humankind and that nature returns to us: plastics, fishing nets, flip-flops, containers, etc. At first glance they look like shapeless objects, but little by little these entangled structures begin to acquire more defined shapes. My fascination with this sculpting capacity, with all kinds of found objects, prompted me to create my own such markers. In the series, the two intertwine. On the one hand, there is a reflection on the creative act itself, and the reuse of materials, but also a call for attention to the waste that we produce, the deterioration of the landscape, and a warning siren about the need to protect and take care of it.

KHAMEKAYE Los Khamekaye son grandes hitos colocados a lo largo del litoral senegalés para marcar el lugar donde, hacia el interior, se encuentran los poblados. Khamekaye significa hito en la lengua wolof, uno de los idiomas más hablados en Senegal y este término es empleado únicamente para designar estas señales de playa. Los Khamekayes están construidos con todos los residuos que devuelve el mar. La base de las estructuras son árboles y rizomas, el resto, toda la basura que producimos y que la naturaleza nos devuelve: plásticos, redes de pesca, chanclas, envases, etc. A primera vista parecen objetos informes, pero poco a poco estas estructuras enmarañadas empiezan a adquirir formas más definidas. Mi fascinación por esta capacidad escultora con todo tipo de objetos encontrados, me llevó a crear mis propios hitos. En la serie, unos y otros se mezclan. Por una parte, hay una reflexión sobre el propio acto creativo y la reutilización de los materiales, pero también una llamada de atención sobre los residuos que producimos, sobre el deterioro del paisaje y una exclamación sobre la necesidad de protegerlo y custodiarlo.
