Journal de hotel
“Journal de Hotel” comprises more than 40 photographs of beds in luxury hotels around the world. These unmade beds have served as my impersonal home during periods of travel and work. Among seas of sheets, details of everyday life are revealed: small objects carelessly left behind amongst pillows and duvets. The beds become a personal landscape, where their mountains and valleys derive from my involuntary movements whilst asleep.
Furthermore, a reflection arose on the meaning of luxury. What makes something or a place luxurious? Is it exclusivity, its value, its quality, its authenticity? In those places, a simple life was lived, with the same routine actions. The unmade beds no longer radiated the ‘luxury’ they were supposed to. And yet, those intimate places affected me, to such an extent that I began to alter my itineraries to include a stop at a hotel where an important event had taken place. As if in a dream, the image would surface as a memory. This is how my ‘diary of beds’ came about—recording days spent in those uninhabited ‘non-places’ that belong to no one, but which, in the end, are as much your own as your own memories.
