Sonate nº1 “Augenmusik” K505

The term «sonata form» has held various meanings throughout history. It began by signifying a work that was to be «sounded» on an instrument. The classical sonata typically consists of three movements connected by a bridge and a final coda. The video mirrors this structure in its editing, concluding the coda with a minuet.

Music easily transports us to the world of images. The reverse—having melodies spring to mind upon seeing an image—may be more difficult, yet it does happen. Certain sounds are inextricably linked to specific images—not merely as symbols of the sounds themselves, but as embodiments of emotion.

The piece «Augenmusik»—German for «visual music»—was filmed in the corridors of the rehearsal rooms at the prestigious Mozarteum Conservatory in Salzburg. Here, the imagery drifts slowly forward amidst pentatonic scales of ghostly voices—voices that, at times, become almost tangible, as if we could reach out and touch them. Our ghosts wander these corridors, making their presence felt as vividly as if they were the images of the figures themselves. Life moves forward, and the voices blend together, increasingly heavy with the weight of the past. We must set them free until they become visible, appearing in the distance as they descend the majestic staircases of our imagination.
