Wasser Khamekaye
The Khamekayes are huge landmarks situated on the Senegalese coast, known as the Grande Côte. They are built to mark the location of the villages along this extensive coastline. They are directly linked to the water. Their large size (they are several metres high) is because they need to be visible from the sea, as this stretch of wild beaches is a fishing territory. The materials used to build them consist of trees washed up by the sea, fishing nets, buoys, buckets, but, above all, plastics that have been floating in the sea for weeks, months or years and which, as they move, become entangled with one another, creating new tangles of intermingled colours.
In my series “Wasser Khamekaye”, I place the Khamekayes within the waters of Lake Neuchâtel. A landmark within the aquatic realm. The Khamekaye dissolves and merges with its own reflection. The figure and its reflection are almost one. This circumstance alludes to the very circularity of waste. Those plastics from the beaches of Senegal end their journey in a distant place, perhaps the very origin of that waste. Do we not sell our waste to distant countries so as not to have it nearby? The milestone has been reached by the very place to which it returns.
Los Khamekayes son grandes hitos situados en la costa senegalesa, llamada Grande Côte. Los construyen para para marcar el lugar donde se encuentran los poblados a lo largo de este extenso litoral. Están directamente relacionados con el agua. Su gran tamaño (miden varios metros de altura) se debe a que tienen que poder ser vistos desde el mar, ya que esa zona de playas salvajes es un territorio de pescadores. Los materiales con los que se construyen se componen de los árboles devueltos por el mar, redes de pescador, boyas, cubos, pero, sobre todo, plásticos que han estado semanas, meses, años, flotando en el mar y que, con su movimiento, se mezclan unos con otros creándose nuevas marañas de colores entremezclados.
En mi serie Wasser Khamekaye introduzco los Khamekayes dentro del agua del lago Neuchâtel. El hito dentro del territorio acuático. El Khamekaye se diluye y se funde en su propio reflejo. La figura y su espejo son casi uno. Esta circunstancia hace referencia a la propia circularidad de los residuos. Aquellos plásticos de las playas de Senegal finalizan su recorrido en un paraje lejano, quizá el origen mismo de esos residuos. ¿Acaso no vendemos nuestros deshechos a países lejanos para no tenerlos cerca? El hito ha sido alcanzad por el propio lugar al que volver.
